Our Mission: Making Smart Tech Decisions Accessible to Everyone
We believe everyone deserves honest, expert guidance when navigating the overwhelming world of smart home devices. No fluff, no paid placements — just rigorous testing and clear answers so you spend your money wisely.
From Frustration to the Review Site We Wished Existed
In 2019, our founder Daniel Mercer spent three weeks researching smart home devices before converting his apartment. He visited 14 websites, read 40+ reviews, and still bought two devices that were incompatible with each other. He returned both, frustrated, and decided to build something better.
GadgetCritic launched as a personal blog with one simple promise: write only about devices he’d actually used, tested, and had real opinions on. Within six months, the newsletter hit 5,000 subscribers. Within a year, brands were sending review units and readers were writing in saying “this saved me so much money.”
Today, our team of 8 engineers, tech journalists, and IoT specialists has tested over 500 devices and helps 75,000 monthly readers make smarter purchasing decisions. We’ve never accepted a sponsored ranking, and we never will.
I wanted a review site that answered the question I actually had: will this thing work with what I already own, and is it worth the price?
From a Blog to a Trusted Platform
Daniel launched GadgetCritic.blog after his own frustrating smart home experience. First review: Google Nest Hub. First 1,000 newsletter subscribers within 90 days.
Rented a 600 sq ft dedicated testing space in Austin, TX. Hired two full-time reviewers — both former consumer electronics engineers. Hit 100 products tested.
Team expanded to 6. Launched our 28-point proprietary scoring system. Surpassed 250 products tested and welcomed our 50,000th monthly reader.
8 expert reviewers, 500+ products tested, 75,000 monthly readers, zero sponsored rankings. Building the most trusted independent smart home review platform on the internet.
To make smart tech decisions genuinely accessible to everyone
We exist to eliminate the information gap between tech companies and everyday consumers. Our mission is to provide the clearest, most honest, most useful product guidance available — so every reader can buy with total confidence, regardless of their technical background.
A world where no one buys the wrong tech again
We envision a future where honest, expert-backed information is always one click away — where consumers drive the market by making informed decisions, and where marketing budgets can never override genuine quality. Every review we publish is a step toward that world.
What Drives Us
Six core values guide every decision we make — from how we test to what we publish
We are funded by readers through affiliate commissions, never by brand sponsorships. Our rankings cannot be purchased and our editors operate with full editorial freedom.
We clearly disclose how we earn money, how we test products, and where our data comes from. No hidden agendas, no fine print designed to deceive.
Every reviewer has industry credentials — engineering backgrounds, tech journalism experience, or IoT development expertise. No amateur opinions presented as authoritative.
We will publish a negative review of a product even if the brand has a working relationship with us. Truth comes first. If it’s bad, we say so — clearly and specifically.
Our readers shape what we cover. We read every email, track your questions, and build content that answers what you’re actually wondering about — not just what’s trending.
We update reviews as products evolve, revise rankings when new data emerges, and constantly improve our testing methodology. A two-year-old review gets a fresh look.
Our Testing Process
Every product undergoes rigorous evaluation before we publish a single word. Here’s what’s behind every score you see on this site.
We source devices through official review programs or purchase at retail. We document the out-of-box experience, setup quality, and first-impression build before any performance testing begins.
Products are integrated into actual home environments and used daily. We don’t test in labs only — we live with devices, observe edge cases, and document problems that only appear after extended use.
Where applicable, we use calibrated instruments: sound level meters for speakers, energy monitors for plugs, motion timing tools for automation devices. Scores are grounded in measurable data.
We test every device with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and SmartThings. We document which integrations actually work, which are buggy, and which are misrepresented in marketing materials.
The primary reviewer writes the review. A second team member independently reviews the device and the draft. Final scores are calculated using our 28-point rubric. No review publishes without passing both stages.
